The faculty of Environmental Sciences (OAU) offers programmes leading to a Bachelor Degree (General and Honours) in Environmental Sciences. The undergraduate courses are designed in compliance with the philosophy that environment is a central theme around which an educational programme can be unified.

Therefore, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics play a particularly important role in the faculty's study programme, since these disciplines constitute the parameters with which the environment is described. It is an interdisciplinary programme which aims to provide students with knowledge and intellectual technical skills.

In doing so, the faculty will bridge the gab in civil services where environmental consultants are badly needed.

The graduates of the (FES) should be able to identify, monitor, assess and solve environmental problems.

The curriculum engulfs three levels:
Basic courses: Basic Natural Sciences"For first Year"
Environmental courses: Basic Environmental Sciences
Special courses: Specialized environmental sciences

(subordinate courses intermingle throughout the study programme).

· The study is conducted on a semester-base system whereby each academic year is divided into two semesters.

· A semester consists of 15 weeks with an average 14 hours teaching per week plus two weeks for examinations (total time 17 weeks/semester).

· The duration of study is as follows:
a. Bachelor (General) Degree minimum 4 years (8 semesters); maximum 6 year (12 semesters).
b. Bachelor (Honours) Degree minmum 5 years (10 semesters), maximum 6 years (12 semesters).

· The first 6 semesters comprising the first three years of the curriculum are common for all students, especially devoted to the basic natural sciences, basic environmental sciences and principles of environmental managemnet. Special attention is given to the holistic interdisciplinary approach to environmental probles.
Based on the results of third year final examinations intake of Honour students commences (intake is based on academic performance).

· In the 7th and 8th semesters (4th year of study) Bachelor (Honours) students have special courses in addition to those shared with the Bachelor (General) students. (special courses are designed by the relevant departments)

· After passing all examinations and complying with the requirements set for graduation, the Bachelor (General) Degree students will sit for a State Exam which is a prerequisite for the acquisition of a Bachelor (General) Degree in Environmental Sciences.

· Bachelor (Honours) students proceed to the 9th and 10th semesters where intensive training, specialized courses and technical skills will be offered by the relevant departments. Much attention will be paid to research oriented techniques.

· Final examinations are followed by submission of a thesis as partial fulfillment for the acquisition of a Bachelor (Honour) Degree in Environmental Sciences.
